Lithium-ion Battery Guidelines
🔋 Lithium-Ion Battery Safety & Usage Guidelines
Lithium-ion batteries are high-energy devices. When used improperly, they can overheat, catch fire, explode, or release toxic gases, resulting in serious injury or property damage.
By purchasing and using lithium-ion batteries from TinkerTech AU, you agree to follow all safety instructions outlined below.
⚠️ IMPORTANT – USER RESPONSIBILITY
- These batteries are intended for experienced and knowledgeable users only
- Improper use may result in fire, explosion, or personal injury
- You assume all risks and responsibility associated with:
- Handling
- Charging
- Storage
- Application
By purchasing this product, you confirm that you have read and understood this safety notice.
TinkerTech AU is not liable for misuse, improper handling, or unsafe operation.
🔴 Intended Use & Limitations
- Batteries must be used in properly designed battery packs with a Battery Management System (BMS)
- Not intended for:
- Standalone consumer use without protection
- Improper DIY applications
- Unregulated or unsafe devices
Incorrect use without proper protection can lead to overcharging, short circuits, or thermal runaway.
⚠️ Use of Unprotected Cells (CRITICAL)
Loose lithium-ion cells (e.g. 18650 / 21700):
- Are NOT protected batteries
- Require knowledge of:
- Voltage limits
- Current limits
- Safe discharge rates
Do NOT use if you are unfamiliar with battery safety principles.
✅ Safe Handling Guidelines
- Inspect batteries before use
- Do NOT use if:
- Damaged, dented, punctured, or swollen
- Wrapping is torn or insulation compromised
Always:
- Store in protective cases
- Keep away from metal objects (keys, coins, tools)
- Avoid drops, crushing, or impact
⚡ Charging Safety
- Use only approved and compatible chargers
- Charge on a non-flammable surface (concrete, ceramic, metal)
- Monitor batteries during charging
- Disconnect once fully charged
Do NOT:
- Charge unattended or overnight
- Charge on beds, sofas, or carpet
- Use damaged chargers or cables
Charging in unsafe conditions is a leading cause of battery fires.
🏠 Charging Environment (Recommended)
- Do NOT charge:
- In bedrooms
- Near exits
- Inside enclosed living spaces
- Prefer:
- Garage / workshop / non-living area
Ensure smoke alarms are installed nearby.
📦 Storage & Transport
- Store in a cool, dry location
- Keep away from:
- Heat and sunlight
- Moisture
- Flammable materials
- Transport:
- In protective cases
- With terminals covered
Lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods (Class 9) under Australian transport rules
🚫 Prohibited Use
Do NOT:
- Use damaged or modified batteries
- Short-circuit terminals
- Mix different battery types or charge levels
- Expose batteries to water or fire
- Install incorrectly
🔥 Thermal Runaway & Emergency Response
If a battery:
- Becomes hot
- Swells
- Emits smoke or odor
Immediately:
- Stop using
- Move to a non-flammable area
- Keep away from people and materials
If a fire occurs:
- Use dry sand or appropriate extinguisher
- Do NOT use water
- Evacuate and call emergency services
Lithium-ion fires are difficult to extinguish and can reignite
⚠️ Chemical Exposure
If battery contents contact skin or eyes:
- Rinse immediately with clean water
- Seek medical attention
♻️ Disposal & Recycling (Australia)
- Do NOT dispose in household rubbish
- Batteries can cause fires in bins and trucks
Dispose via:
- Approved recycling centres
- Battery recycling programs (e.g. B-cycle)
👶 Child Safety
- Keep out of reach of children and pets
- Risk of burns, ingestion, and injury
